# Enable Exa search

> Give your AI Exa web search in OpenWork, either as a connector for your whole organization or as an MCP server in your own workspace.

[Exa](https://exa.ai) is a search engine built for AI. Add it to OpenWork and
your AI can search the web and read pages.

There are two ways to add Exa:

* **For your organization.** An admin adds the Exa connector in OpenWork Cloud
  with one Exa API key. Everyone the admin picks can use it.
* **For yourself.** Add Exa as an MCP server in your own workspace. This works
  without an OpenWork Cloud account.

The desktop app no longer has an Exa switch in **Settings › Advanced**.

## Add Exa for your organization

You need to be an owner or admin in OpenWork Cloud, and you need an API key from
your Exa account. Exa's usage limits and billing apply to that key.

1. In OpenWork Cloud, open **Manage › Connectors**.
2. Click **Add connector**, then pick **Exa**.
3. When OpenWork asks for a key, paste your Exa API key and click **Save key**.
4. Wait for the checks to finish.
5. Under **Who can use it**, turn on **Everyone in the organization**, or click
   **Add person** or **Add team**.
6. Click **Add Exa**.

Everyone uses the key you added, so nobody else has to sign in. People you gave
access to find Exa in **Settings › Library** in the desktop app.

To replace the key later, open Exa in **Manage › Connectors**, open
**Settings**, and enter a **New API key**.

See [Sharing MCP connections with your team](https://openworklabs.com/docs/cloud/share-with-your-team/shared-mcp-connections.md)
for more about connectors.

## Add Exa for yourself

1. In the desktop app, open **Settings › Library**.

2. Expand **Advanced settings** and click **Add workspace MCP**.

3. Enter an **App name**, for example `exa`.

4. Keep **Remote server (URL)** as the type and enter this **Server URL**:

   ```text theme={null}
   https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp
   ```

5. Click **Add App**.

Exa is added to the current workspace only. The **Add workspace MCP** dialog
has no API key field. Exa lets you use this address without a key, with free
rate limits. See [Exa MCP](https://docs.exa.ai/reference/exa-mcp) for details.

[Add a custom MCP server](https://openworklabs.com/docs/start-here/connect-your-stack/add-an-mcp-server.md).

## Try it

Ask your AI for something that needs current information:

> Search the web for this week's news about electric trucks and summarize the top three stories.
