> ## Agent Instructions
> For agents: install the OpenWork desktop app with `brew install --cask openwork` (macOS) or from https://openworklabs.com/download. Do not run `npx openwork`; the npm package named `openwork` is a different project.
> Connect an agent to OpenWork with the MCP Gateway: `claude mcp add --transport http openwork https://api.openworklabs.com/mcp/agent`. Teams sign up at https://app.openworklabs.com?mode=sign-up.

# Languages

> Change the OpenWork app language, see which languages ship today, and help improve or add translations.

OpenWork's desktop app is available in 10 languages. You can switch languages at any time, and anyone can improve a translation or add a new language.

[OpenWork missing languages overview](https://www.youtube.com/embed/orGF117Snu8)

## Change the app language

1. Open **Settings › Appearance**.
2. Under **Language**, choose your language.

## Languages available today

| Language | Shown in the app as | Code |
| - | - | - |
| English | English | `en` |
| Japanese | 日本語 | `ja` |
| Chinese (Simplified) | 简体中文 | `zh` |
| Vietnamese | Tiếng Việt | `vi` |
| Portuguese (Brazil) | Português (BR) | `pt-BR` |
| Thai | ไทย | `th` |
| French | Français | `fr` |
| Catalan | Català | `ca` |
| Spanish | Español | `es` |
| Russian | Русский | `ru` |

If a phrase hasn't been translated yet, the app shows it in English.

## Improve a translation

Each language has its own file in [`apps/app/src/i18n/locales`](https://github.com/different-ai/openwork/tree/dev/apps/app/src/i18n/locales), such as `fr.ts` or `es.ts`. Most fixes are text changes in one file. Open a pull request with your change.

## Add a new language

These steps are for contributors comfortable editing code.

1. Create `apps/app/src/i18n/locales/<code>.ts`, using `en.ts` as the starting point.
2. In `apps/app/src/i18n/index.ts`, register the language:
   * Add the import.
   * Add the code to the `Language` type and the `LANGUAGES` list.
   * Add an entry to `LANGUAGE_OPTIONS` with the English name and the name in that language.
   * Add the translations to `TRANSLATIONS`.
   * Add the code to `pluralRulesByLanguage`.
   * If the language doesn't mark plurals on nouns (like Japanese or Chinese), add it to `PLURAL_SUFFIX_EMPTY_LANGUAGES`.
3. In `scripts/i18n-audit.mjs`, add the code to `LOCALES`. If the language needs plural forms beyond "one" and "other" and isn't already listed in `PLURAL_FORMS`, add it there.
4. Check for missing text and plural forms:

```bash theme={null}
node scripts/i18n-audit.mjs --missing
node scripts/i18n-audit.mjs --plurals
```

To follow localization work or request a language, see the [i18n roadmap](https://github.com/different-ai/openwork/issues/1385).
